Sermon Series on David
Bruce Martin, Pastor

Unlike most of the articles I write for the bulletin, I want to use this space today to prepare you for the sermon series on which we will focus in the coming weeks.  So often we study Bible characters with an almost cartoonist attitude, seeing them as surreal, as opposed to genuine everyday people.  Of course, they are in the Bible, and that alone sets them light years ahead of anyone we have ever met or known.  Still, they were common people accomplishing extraordinary things for God.  Such is the case with the subject of our upcoming series on David.

So often we see only the actions of biblical characters and do not get a glimpse into their heart.  We are very familiar with Moses leading the Children of Israel through a desert, Elijah calling fire down from heaven, Samson ripping the city gates out of the ground, and Daniel resting quite comfortably in a lions den.  However, very rarely do we get a chance to look into the heart and soul of these great giants.  David poured his heart out in his poetry.  The dichotomy of having a great warrior king on one hand and a sensitive emotional in-touch-with-his-feminine-side guy on the other probably sends shivers of fear down each man’s neck.  There is no need to fear— David is here!  If anyone can bridge the macho-sensitive chasm, David can.  He shares his heart in a very manly fashion.  Yes, he shares openly his humility, insecurity, loneliness, love, intimacy, distress, comfort, and even anger.  Although we read of his exploits in the historical books, we see his passion for God in the Psalms.  It is our goal in this series not only to understand the man called David, but to see why God says that David was a man after His own heart.
